FAQs

?

This course travels to both sides of the Mexico-US border to address problems associated with human migration in North America. We examine firsthand the “push factors” and “pull factors” that motivate migrants to embark on a difficult journey to the US-Mexico border. Through collaborative design, we innovate ways to improve upon situations of the communities we engage directly with.

Discovering this ancient land and immersing ourselves in its diverse cultures are both sweet and essential to our mission. We will tour the region, closely examine current policies and their impact, meet grassroots activists, interact with ordinary folk, and attend college seminars on politics of the Americas and conflict resolution. A variety of recreational activities and very much fun are of course part of the experience. Open to students, educators, and other groups. No background on the subject is necessary.

Location

Although the cross-border neighboring communities in Southern California and Northern Baja California have somewhat similar geographies and climates, the disparities in socio-economics become immediately apparent. The Mexico-US Border is fraught on many levels: humanitarian, political, economic, climatic, and so on. The situations and dilemmas here are emblematic of other recent and massive migrations worldwide, bearing similar but not identical characteristics. This is the border where typical scenes of international human migration play out, affecting most everyone and fueling impassioned debate.

We will be based in the areas of San Diego, CA and Baja California, Mexico. Our daily expeditions on either side of the border will be in areas ranging from urban to rural, from beach to desert. There we engage directly with affected communities.

FAQs

IS IT SAFE?

Yes, absolutely. Understandably, news headlines may cause apprehension among prospective participants. However, here are some important points to consider: Safety and security is the number one priority. Expeditions are to safe areas and avoid high risk zones. We closely monitor the situation in the area on a constant basis and the itinerary would be adjusted accordingly if we felt that we could not properly ensure participant safety and well-being. Safety is enhanced by the fact that we are in a structured environment. We use our own vehicles, not public transportation. Group leaders are reachable at all times.
